The 15-Minute Weekly Desk Reset

A short Friday routine that keeps a desk organized without ever needing a big cleanup.

Desks do not get messy in a day. They drift. A receipt here, a cable there, a stack of mail that was going to be dealt with. The fix is not a big cleanup every few months; it is fifteen minutes on Friday afternoon, every week, with a set order.

Minutes 0 to 3: clear the surface

Everything that is not furniture comes off the desk and onto the chair or floor. Yes, everything. It is faster than deciding item by item, and it forces the next step.

Minutes 3 to 8: sort into four piles

Trash. File. Act on. Put away. Trash goes in the bin now. File goes in the bottom tray of the letter tray. Act on goes in the middle tray. Put away is everything else: cables, chargers, the book, the mug.

Minutes 8 to 11: wipe and put back

Wipe the desk and the desk mat. Put back only what you used this week: monitor, keyboard, mouse, one organizer, one lamp. If something sat on the desk all week without being touched, it goes in a drawer or a basket, not back on the desk.

Minutes 11 to 14: drawers and cables

Open the top drawer. If the drawer organizer compartments have drifted, put things back where they belong. Check that chargers are coiled and in their bin. Look under the desk: if a cable has escaped the cable box, clip it back.

Minute 15: the act-on tray

Look at the middle tray. If something has been there three weeks, either do it now, schedule it or admit it is not happening and bin it.

Why it works

Fifteen minutes is short enough that you will actually do it. Doing it weekly means there is never more than a week of drift to undo. And because the order is fixed, you stop making decisions about how to tidy and just tidy.
